Community rooting for Danish By Louis Brewster, Staff Writer Daily Bulletin
It was supposed to be a festive time at the Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway this past weekend. It was to be the last hurrah for track manager Dave Danish and wife Cathy, who worked together to make the drag strip a success.
That's not the way it all worked out.
Danish was critically injured in a traffic accident Friday night en route to dinner with his crew. Cathy suffered bumps and bruises but escaped uninjured.
As of Monday night, Dave Danish remained in a coma in the cardiac intensive care unit at Upland's San Antonio Hospital and the local drag racing community is still holding its breath. Danish is a popular figure and his future weighed heavily on the racers during the weekend.
"We have received hundreds of calls, letters and emails from people within the motorsports community," speedway president Gillian Zucker said. "The outpouring of support has been tremendous and people's thoughts, along with everyone at California Speedway, are with the Danish family.
Anyone wishing to send a note of support to the family, Zucker said, can do so at operations@californiaspeedway.com.
Danish had recently accepted an offer to return to Southwestern International Raceway outside Tucson, Ariz. He had served as the Fontana track manager for three years and won NHRA track of the year honors the past two years.
