Byrd began his racing career in 1977 at San Jose Speedway. He won his first track championship that same year at the age of 18. Since that time, Byrd has accumulated over 200 NASCAR feature wins on both dirt and pavement racetracks, 14 championships, several state titles, the prestigious Winston Pacific Coast Regional Championship. In the popularity department, he was selected Driver of the Year by the Motor Press Association and he has been voted most popular driver by the racing fans for most of his career. Since mid 1990s Byrd has dominated the Winston Racing Series, and has driven in select NASCAR Southwest Tour events.

In 1994, Byrd won both the Stockton 99 Speedway Track Championship (pavement track), and the Watsonville Speedway Track Championship (dirt track), along with winning 18 feature events.

In 1995, Byrd amazed the racing community as he again won two championships, one at Altamont Raceway Park (pavement track) and the Watsonville Speedway (dirt track).

In 1996, Byrd returned to the Stockton 99 Speedway. During his campaign he won 8 feature events. His success enabled him to easily win his second track championship at Stockton 99 Speedway in 3 years.

In 1997, Byrd made the move from weekly racing to new NASCAR Mega Power Challenge Series. Byrd dominated the tour by winning the first 5 events. He easily captured the series title by winning 7 out of the 10 events. Byrd also won the 1997 Tri-Holiday Classic series at Stockton 99 Speedway by winning 2 out of the 3 events.

In 1999, Byrd was injured in a crash during a NASCAR Southwest Tour event at Phoenix. He has taken a couple of years off to enjoy life. In 2001, he is back and winning on both dirt and pavement (10 feature wins). His goal for the future is to run full time in either the NASCAR Southwest Tour or the Winston West Series, but he would consider any ride along the way.
