RINGERS GLOVES RACING RECAPMINDY’S MONDAY MINUTE
Source: Ringers Gloves Media Relations
Rain moved in and out of the area throughout the day, but the NHRA Safety Safari did a marvelous job of preparing the track in between breaks in the weather and gave the professional finalists prime track conditions for racing and winning…including rookie Brown. Ringers’ supporter Brown matched up against current POWERade Top Fuel champion Tony Schumacher and unlike the other Brown/Schumacher match-ups, Brown came out on top. Brown claimed his second Top Fuel victory of the season with a holeshot 4.53-second run win over Shoe. The win advances Brown to second in Top Fuel points heading into St. Louis this weekend. In Pro Stock Motorcycles, a consistent Andrew Hines picked up his first Wally of the season with a win over Schumacher Racing’s Chip Ellis. Hines made a total on eight 6.9-second passes the whole weekend including the 6.950 that gave him the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle low qualifier award in pre-race ceremonies at the top of Sunday. Hines became the third different motorcycle winner of the season, joining reigning champion Matt Smith with his Houston win and Matt Guidera picking up the season-opening win at Gainesville. The POWERade Drag Racing Series, whose name change was announced on Thursday that it will be known as the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series in 2009 and beyond, continue straight onto the Gateway International Raceway just outside of St. Louis for the O’Reilly Midwest Nationals presented by Castrol. Just about a three-hour drive south of where the NHRA stars were racing, the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers battled it out on Sunday afternoon at the Talladega Superspeedway in the Aaron’s 499. Of the Penske Racing trio, Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman and his No. 12 Alltel Dodge was the only driver to survive the enduring race and complete the 188 laps unscathed. Newman, finishing eighth, collected his second top-10 finish in a restrictor plate race this season. However, his teammates didn’t have the finishing luck he did. Sam Hornish Jr. suffered a blown tire and an expired engine in his No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge, handing him a 35th place finish. The third Penske driver Kurt Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge were victim of a late-race crash, resulting in a 39th place finish. The Penske trio head to Richmond International Raceway for the Crown Royal 400. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series the only series not playing with the rest of the NASCAR kids at Talladega over the weekend. However they did have some track time at the Kansas Speedway in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250. Ringers’ supporting driver Brendan Gaughan led the supporting racers to the finish line in sixth place. Other Ringers’ team supporting notables in the field were Jason White, driving the No. 08 Green Light Racing entry in 15th and Shane Sieg finishing 18th in the No. 51 Billy Ballew Motorsports Toyota. The other entries from the Green Light and Billy Ballew camps both retired from the race early due to an accident in the No. 15 and a failed engine in the No. 07. The trucks don’t return to action until May 16 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200, the weekend of the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star race. Ringers Gloves would like to congratulate supporting racer Brad Haudenschild on scoring his first career 305 sprint car feature win at Fremont Speedway in Ohio. Haudenschild is the son of Ed Haudenschild and nephew of World of Outlaws regular Jac Haudenschild.
