![]() Last weekend under the sunny skies in Santa Maria, CA the 2008 IKF Grand Nationals were held. Branden Underwood and the Top Kart USA team had their best weekend of the season. Competing in four classes Branden was busy all week long. Throughout practice Branden was consistently one of the top three fastest drivers in all four classes. First up on Thursday was the Junior Sportsman category where Branden qualified in fourth. The heat race would go well running in the lead group finishing in fourth. Working with tuner Chris Wehrheim the team made a few changes for the final and was set to challenge for the win. Falling back one position at the start, the top five broke away from the main field. Branden sat tight managing his equipment waiting for the right time to pounce. With a few laps to go he made his move and worked his way into second setting the fastest lap of the race. Unfortunately he waiting one lap too long and was passed finishing a strong third.
Day two proved to be a much better day competing in the Junior Super Sportsman Heavy class. Qualifying in second, Branden and teammate Taylor Miinch broke away from the field and finished in the same order they started the race. The final looked much the same as the heat race, but Branden’s kart came in a little to late in the race to challenge Miinch for the win.
The next two days were full of bad luck. Branden continued to show his speed on track only to be involved in multiple on track incidents that were not of his doing.
“We had a great weekend even though the last two days did not go our way,” commented Branden Underwood. “I am very happy to have regained the pace we have shown in previous years and I am looking forward to going after the championship in IKF.”
Branden would like to thank all of his sponsors for their continuing support and making this weekend possible: Terrible Herbst, Position One, Prestige Plumbing, BJC Investments, Oakley, MLP Imaging, PKS Kart Supplies, Graphix Plus, No Fear, Grand Products, and Star Nursery. Branden Underwood Racing also congratulates Miinch Motorsports on their outstanding weekend.
Branden still has numerous races left on his schedule including two remaining IKF Region 7 races where he is in the thick of the championship battle along with the ASA Speed Truck Race in October and SKUSA SuperNationals.
