POSITION ONE MOTORSPORTS TACKLES ANOTHER ROUND OF RACES

BALDWIN PARK, California – After a heartbreak of a weekend at Rounds #16 and #17 Luis Martinez Jr and his Position One Motorsports crew arrived at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale this weekend looking for redemption and a lot of good luck. With the last 2 weeks spent repairing the damage from the the last race and replacing an engine, the team anxiously gathered under another depressingly hot Southern California Sun determined to make up ground in their point standings.

Qualifying:

The Qualifying session for Martinez was without incident. Being one of the first competitors to take to the track Martinez quickly put the repaired car and new engine to the test and completed the 2 qualifying laps with razor sharp precision ending up seventh on the timesheets. Martinez's time would hold for a couple of other qualifying tries from other drivers but he would eventually end up sixteenth on the timesheets by the end of the session.

Race 1:

Starting on the sixteenth spot Martinez quickly got up to speed and was soon alongside his Position One Motorsports teammate Randel King (# 35 Randel King Motorsports-Molecule) who, like Martinez, is also battling for the Rookie of the Year award. By Lap # 10 Martinez and King were continuing their back and forth on-track exchange. On Lap # 16 Martinez's luck took a turn for the good. While locked in a group with 5 other drivers two of the cars got together and spun in front of the # 03 KING TACO machine. Both cars managed to save themselves and Luis managed to escape the incident unscathed. By the restart, Martinez had put himself in the twelfth position, behind King. After another caution on Lap # 31, Martinez once again was the beneficiary. Now sitting in the eleventh spot, and with nine laps to go, he began to battle King once again. With the race closing, Martinez and King battled hard and at the last turn of the last lap Martinez, having a good run off the last turn, got side by side along King and crossed the finish line. This time it would be King who would prevail with Martinez only 1/10 seconds from beating him. Martinez's finishing position was eleventh.

Race 2:

Lining up in the fourteenth position, Martinez started the race much like he did during his earlier race, alongside Randel King. Immediately after the completion of the first lap there was a crash on the backstretch. While Martinez did manage to escape the incident it was not without some minor damage to his left front corner. Undeterred by the damage the youngster regrouped and continued the fight to the front. By Lap # 15 he was in eleventh but on Lap 26 the # 18 car of Duane Hunt Jr hit Martinez from behind causing him to lose control in the middle of Turn #1. Showing incredible control Martinez managed to save the car but the incident cost him dearly and he would end up crossing the finish line in the fourteenth position

For Randel King, this weekend's events were also redeeming. In the first race he would finish the race in the tenth position and in the second he bested his prior finish by finishing in the fifth position, which ties his best finish, which came at Round # 11 on June 28th.

In the 2008 Championship standings both Martinez and King did improve as Martinez scooted up to 13th with 426 points while King shot up to 9th with 470 points.

Position One Motorsports will compete again on September 13th when the twentieth and last race of the NASCAR ACDelco Super Late Model series is scheduled to occur.

Luis Martinez Jr – Driver: “This weekend started off very positive. We showed up to the track without practicing on Friday night and still we were able to run with some of the guys that had the luxury of practicing. As for the race itself, it could have been a little bit better if there weren't as many accidents in front of me, but oh well, that's racing. The crew did an amazing job in the weeks prior to this race weekend. I think we still might have a shot at the rookie championship, so that's what I'm going to strive for next weekend”

Larry Nava – Crew Chief: “Luis showed more improvement this weekend and really drove the car very well. The crew did a great job and under the difficult physical conditions they gave 110%”

Luis Martinez – Owner: “I think the team’s goal this weekend was to finish both races, and we accomplished that, of course, not without incident. We tore up some equipment trying to dodge the many crashes that plagued this weekend’s races. Luckily our driver is fine and the car can be fixed in time for next week’s race. The team had done an exceptional job these past two weeks getting the car ready after some disappointing visits to the track the past couple weeks.”
