Race number seven of an eighteen race schedule for 2003 season will see the Speed Truck Challenge at Irwindale Speedway this coming Saturday night for 75 laps of super competitive and very fast racing at LA's ? mile Super Speedway. The Speed Trucks get around this ? mile high banked oval in 19 seconds, the fastest of the three truck divisions and have raced at Irwindale Speedway in 50 lap events green flag to checker without caution, and have also gone 94 laps green in a 100 lap race with only a solo spin out. 28 Speed Trucks have entered this race to battle in a very tight Championship Points fight. Speed Truck Challenge points leader John Burritt in the #21 SBC SMART Yellow Pages, SMART Pages.com, PLC Automation, Greg Remund Drywall Chevy S-10 out of Reno, Nevada took the points lead from Covina, California's Lee Hatch in the #91 BHRM, Liquid Eyewear, RBS Graphics, Parker Pumper Ford Ranger last week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's "Bullring" and holds a slim 8 points lead over Hatch. 3rd place Laguna Niguel, California Dan Digiacomo, is 34 points behind 2nd place Hatch in his #31 Dodge Dakota sponsored by Russo's Pet Experience and Rich's Motorsports. 4th place Donny Goodwin in the #33 Chevy S-10 from San Clemente, California sponsored by Goodwin Construction / Goodwin Trucking and Scientific Drilling is 34 points behind 3rd place Digiacomo. A mere 4 points separates 5th and 6th place between Riverside, California's #2 Bobby Sayers in the Lucas Oil Products Chevy S-10 with KP Gaming Supplies, Allessi Communications and Riverside Carb and Electric on board, from youngster Andrew Lewis in the Western Reinforcement, Speedway Children's Charity, Rich's Motorsports #04 Chevy S-10 from Corona, California, already with a win at Mesa Marin Raceway last April, sits in the 6th Championship Points position. The 2003 Speed Truck Challenge "Rookie of the Year" points chase has the Rookie Points leader and also 7th place Championship Points holder Norco, California based Robert Kroeker in the #58 Valvoline, Merritt Pool Construction Speed Truck with a lead of 11 points over Alan Sanchez from Jamul, California in the #20 Lozano/Decuir Motorsports Dodge Dakota. Sanchez is ranked in the 10th place position in the 2003 season Championship Points battle. Following Kroeker and Sanchez in 3rd place is another youngster hailing from San Diego, California in the #50 US Mortgage Marketing, Garrett Custom Trailers Dodge Dakota is Kevin Fedderson, followed by 4th place Lee Keach's #03 Desert Nissan, Western Auto Sales, United Nissan sponsored Speed Truck from Las Vegas, Nevada, making a charge on the Rookie Points board. Other notables are Keith Cummins in the #29 Merritt Pool Construction Dodge Dakota and Las Vegas resident #82 Terry Young in the Stateline Towing, Emerald Suites Dodge Dakota both tied for 5th in the Rookie Points positions.
The Speed Truck Challenge travels the Southwest competing at Madera Speedway, Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway, Tucson Raceway Park, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mesa Marin Raceway, Cajon Speedway, Orange Show Speedway, Irwindale Speedway and has raced numerous events at Phoenix International Raceway, Willow Springs International Raceway, Tustin Thunder, San Diego Grand Prix and the Tecate Grand Prix since its inception in 1997. The Speed Trucks are full tube chassis, 108 inch wheelbase, 330 horsepower Vortec V-8's, coupled to a 2 speed direct drive transmission, aluminum quick change rear end, 8 inch Hoosier racing slicks, fueled by 76 Racing Gasoline and are capable of speeds of 150 MPH. The Speed Trucks sport exact replica fiberglass bodies in Chevy S-10, GMC Sonoma, Ford Ranger, Dodge Dakota, Toyota Tacoma and coming soon Nissan Frontier bodies. Saturday nights adventure at Irwindale Speedway with the Mechanix Wear Speed Truck Challenge will also have the NASCAR Jani-King Super Late Models, Automobile Club of Southern California Late Models, King Taco Legend Cars, Mini-Stocks and a special treat with the "Super TT" Motorcycles for "Hot Tamale Night" at Irwindale Speedway. The action gets under way when the gates open at 4:00 PM, practice and qualifying by all divisions, the King Taco On-Track Autograph Session at 6:00 PM and racing at 7:00 PM. Tickets are easy to get.
