JAMES AND WILKINS WIN THROUGH FULL FIELDS OF MODIFIEDS AND BOMBERS
UKIAH SPEEDWAY
Source: CC
The Modified races were attended by 16 cars from both speedways. Corey James of Laytonville, who was racing double duty in the Late Models, made a late race pass just before a red flag for the inside lead to win the main event. Terry McIntire of Lakeport set the fast time of 13.276s. Fans were thrilled to see that the Bombers were back in force with 29 cars in three heat races and a B-Main to set the A-Main field. Though in a tight and hotly contested pack, they went 17 laps before the first yellow flag. Jerry Wilkins of Willits worked his way up from 12th through some fierce duels to finally claim the checkers. Eric Williamson of Redwood Valley set he fast time of 15.721s. The Late Model fast time of 13.454s was set, and the heat race won, by Corey James of Laytonville. However, it was Jeremy Donahoo of Colverdale who claimed both the trophy dash and the main event. Mini-Stocks were again dominated by Robert Schmidt of Lucerne who set the fast time of 14.857s and won all of the events. Jarred Martin of Ukiah stayed ahead of the battles behind him to win the Bonus Bomber main event. Andy Vander Veer of Santa Rosa set the fast time of 14.799s. The Bandolero main event was won by Drew Smith of Ukiah who also set the fast time of 15.970s. Kyle Tellstrom of Ukiah won the trophy heat. Late Models John Dalerio and Blair Aiken led the seven car Late Model field to the main event start. Jeremy Donahoo and Corey James took first and second in the first lap as Blair Aiken was forced to retire with engine troubles. Charlie Collins also retired in lap four. Lap six saw the only yellow of the race as Dalerio and Manuel Sean Caturegli tangled. Donahoo and James restarted the field, but Forrest Kuecker quickly gained second in lap seven. Dalerio retired in lap 20. Donahoo held off Kuecker and James for the remaining laps, followed by Caturegli. Dalerio placed fifth followed by Collins and Aiken. James won the heat race. Modifieds The Modified main event featured 16 cars with Scott Sabol and Corey James in the poll row. Kevin Estep took second on the inside in lap two while James, Jeremy Nowlin, and Codi Barba vied for third through fifth. Drew Foster retired to the pits in lap seven. By lap nine, Derrick Crayford and Steve Taylor had worked their way up to Barba in fifth when Barba spun in turn two and brought out the first yellow. Sabol and Estep restarted the field and Estep took the lead. Clay Caturegli and Darin Snider had reached sixth place Crayford in lap 12 when Snider spun in turn three for another yellow. Estep and Sabol led the restart but, in two laps, Sabol lost second to James, Nowlin lost fourth to Taylor, and Crayford lost sixth to Caturegli. Snider left for the pits in lap 14. In lap 20, as he lost third to Caturegli, Sabol spun in turn one for a caution. The restart saw another yellow as Sabol lost his oil filter and dumped oil all around the track just as James took the lead from Estep. The race was red flagged to clean up the mess. This allowed Snider the time to finish repairs and rejoin the race. James and Estep brought the field to the restart and kept their positions for the remaining four laps. James crossed the finish in first, followed by Estep, Nowlin, Taylor, and Crayford. Taylor won the trophy dash, and Snider and Ben Phillips the heat races. Mini-Stocks The Mini-Stocks main event six car field was led to the green by Brad Laird and Davey Coyne. Robert Schmidt quickly powered to the front while Coyne and Todd Armstrong waged a race-long battle for second. Coyne made the pass in lap 19 and held it to the end. At the finish it was Schmidt in first, followed by Armstrong, Coyne, Laird, and Jessica Aceves. Bonus Bombers Six cars made the Bonus Bomber main event, with Tim Grayson, George Mavrakis, and Bill Mucci suffering technical problems. The pack was started by Keith Nelson and Jarred Martin. Martin took the lead from the outside while Andy Vander Veer and Manuel Antonio vied for third. The front four quickly lapped Galdino Guevara and Ian Elliot by lap eight. In 13, while lapping Guevara again, Nelson and Vander Veer tangled on the backstretch for the first yellow. Martin and Antonio led the restart but, two laps later, Guevara spun in turn one for the caution. Another restart and another two laps saw another yellow that retired Nelson and sent Vander Veer to the pits for a quick repair. Martin and Antonio restarted again, with Vander Veer working Antonio for third. He completed the pass in lap 22 and was challenging Martin side-by-side for first when they reached the side-by-side lapped traffic of Guevara and Elliot. For three laps Martin and Vander Veer were even but blocked by the slower traffic, and the fans were on their feet in anticipation of who would thread through first. At the checkers it was Martin who edged out Vander Veer followed by Antonio, Guevara, and Elliot. Nelson placed sixth. Nelson won the heat race. Bombers Anthony McCoy and George Abella held off the last ditch challenges of Kevin Slaughter and Nick Rhodes in the Bomber B-Main event to transfer to the A-Main. The 18 car field was started by Cory Mainini and Andy Norton. Despite a full field, the race actually went 17 laps before the first yellow. Norton held the lead until passed by Richie Schwarm in lap 15 and then Jerry Wilkins in 16. Behind them, Brandon Powers and Jimmy Sorrels fiercely dueled for fourth. In lap 17, Randy Portlock spun in turn four for the first yellow. Schwarm and Wilkins restarted the field, but two laps later Ron Duke Jr. and Shelby Helm tangled, locking bumpers into the front-stretch infield, for another yellow that retired Duke Jr. Schwarm and Wilkins led the restart again followed by Norton and the dueling Powers and Sorrels. Robert Byers got spun in turn four but recovered. Danny Helm and Mike Bray were battling for sixth while Wilkins was working Schwarm hard for the lead. Norton was close behind until he got loose and drifted wide in turn two allowing most of the field to pass him. In lap 27, Wilkins finally completed the pass by Schwarm in turn four and kept it to the checkers. Wilkins won the event, followed by Schwarm, Powers, Sorrels, and Helm. Duke Jr. won the trophy dash, and Cody Martin, Bray, and Helm the heat races.
