BYRD WINS IN MADERA AND READIES FOR WESTCAR SHOW AT ALTAMONT

After running as low as ninth, Dave Byrd & Bob Strandwold found their way to victory lane for the first time in 2007, in round two of the SRL Wild West Shootout at Madera Speedway Saturday night.

Byrd took the lead on lap 47 and held onto the lead to the curfew-shortened lap 70 checkered flag.

“We got some breaks Saturday and we’ve needed them,” Byrd said. “It felt great.”

Byrd, a 13-time NASCAR champion and 2006 Altamont Motorsports Park champion, is now just two points out of the points lead in the SRL series.

This Saturday night, Byrd and BSR will run in the Eldorado Westcar Late Model Series 100 lap event at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, CA.

The team is competing full-time in both the Westcar and SRL championships.

Byrd enters the race in the 14th position in the points, hoping to make a big leap after bad luck with mechanical problems in the first two Westcar events of the season.

“This week is vital as far as momentum goes,” Byrd said. “Things would be different if I didn’t think he had the best equipment and team,” Byrd said.

Byrd is focused on trying to complete laps in the Westcar machine.

“I feel like we’re building confidence,” Byrd said. “Every time there is a 100 lapper we can be there at the end. We just need more time in the car.”

A championship is still possible in the series.

”There’s enough races left,” Byrd said. “It’s only been a few races and the bad luck can happen to them (the points leaders) as well.”
