TENINO, Washington – Winged sprint car racing will return to South Sound Speedway this weekend as the ASA-sanctioned Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association returns on Saturday for its only appearance of the 2007 season.

Roseburg, Ore.’s Andy Alberding, who holds the all-time track record at South Sound, is racing for his first series championship. Though he has not won an NSRA main event yet this season, he currently finds himself at the top of the NSRA point standings with a 17-point cushion over Washington’s Monte Zema Jr., who won his first main event last year at South Sound.

Hoping for a first win this weekend is third-place driver Justin Mack of Benton City, Wash. Mack led a main event last month at Idaho’s Meridian Speedway before yielding the top spot to eventual winner Matt Elliott. With his efforts in Idaho, Mack sits third in the NSRA standings.

Former champion Pat Bliss of West Linn, Ore., reunited with car owner Jim Helm, is fourth, a distant 65 points behind Alberding. Craig Deaver, another former NSRA champion, is fifth in the standings and won on this weekend last year at South Sound. He also scored a top five finish in the other South Sound race.

The NSRA ran twice last season at South Sound, a 3/8-mile, high-banked, asphalt oval located just off Interstate 5 between the towns of Tenino and Rochester, after an absence of six years. Zema picked up the checkered flag on May 20 and Deaver returned to the winners circle on June 24. Having its most recent show rained out in British Columbia, this Saturday’s event will be the NSRA’s first since the two Meridian Speedway events last month.

With the track having been changed since their prior appearance in 2000, the NSRA cars shattered the old track record, taking off a full second of time. In the June race, they lowered it a little more as Alberding dirt tracked his way around the 3/8-mile speed plant and set the bar at a blazing 11.87 seconds.

Joining the NSRA on the card are super stocks, who are running a 100-lap event, along with street stocks and vintage modifieds.####
