NSCS TITLE IN CROCKETT’S SIGHT

MEDFORD, Oregon – With finishes of fifth and second in last weekend’s Fred Brownfield Memorial Sprint Challenge, Medford’s Roger Crockett is quickly closing in on the inaugural championship in the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series.

Crockett, a four-time champion of the old Northern Sprint Tour, has led the NSCS point standings the entire season, winning seven out of 17 races the NSCS has completed this year. With those seven wins, Crockett broke his old record from the NST for wins in a season. He was also the all-time feature-victory leader in the NST’s 11-year history.

This Friday and Saturday, September 28 and 29, Crockett will attempt to wrap up the first NSCS title at Central Washington State Fair Raceway in Yakima. He unofficially holds a 124-point cushion over Mitch Olson. Even with the double-points system in affect this weekend, a couple of solid nights should seal the deal for Crockett.

Crockett has won five times in NST competition in Yakima, more than anyone, and it includes a win either Friday or Saturday in the September fair weekend each of the last four years. Main event victories are not the only thing that has helped Crockett and the Henderson Motorsports team in season points. Crockett has been dominant in other categories as well.

Aside from the seven A-Main wins, Crockett also leads all drivers with 12 top-five finishes, three more than next closest driver Mitch Olson. Crockett has top-ten finishes in 15 out of 17 as well. Of his two finishes outside the top ten, the first came when Crockett spun at the end of the race while running second at Southern Oregon Speedway on July 23. The next came on July 28 at the Skagit 360 Nationals when he was running second to Shane Stewart when he broke a U-joint in the car, ending his night.

Crockett has also been one of the fastest qualifiers usually. Crockett has been the fastest driver in qualifying six times, earning him 12 season points each time (24 once in a double-points event). No one else has more than two quick qualifying awards.

Crockett only has two heat race victories, but that is because he is often fast enough in qualifying that he usually starts in the second or third rows. Crockett, however, still gets high point finishes in heat race action, often getting eight or nine season points each time as he has finished second on five occasions and was third place three times. Only twice all season, May 11 at Skagit Speedway and September 14 at Grays Harbor Raceway, has Crockett had to go through the B-Main.

Because he is almost always transferring out of his heat race and was among the fastest in qualifying, Crockett has been in the dash 11 times out of 15 NSCS events where a dash has been held. Being in the dash helps, as Crockett got a guaranteed top-six starting position for the A-Main every time. Five times Crockett won the dash, putting him on the pole.

Crockett, driving the Henderson Motorsports No. 7N Bailey Bros.-powered Eagle, sponsored by Island Muffler & Brake, will look to make it six straight years with a win at Central Washington State Fair Raceway. Crockett was driving for different teams previously, but current car owner Roger Henderson has seen his share of success in Yakima also. Three times Henderson won a NST race at Yakima with the legendary Steve Kent between 2000 and 2002.

Crockett won his first NST event in Yakima on June 7, 2002. Each year from 2003 to 2005 he won the Friday show in the September fair weekend before scoring the Saturday victory last year in the final ever NST event. In 2005 Crockett was also leading the Saturday fair weekend feature in Yakima when he cut a tire down and lost his chances at the weekend sweep.####
