MAYHEW GOING IN STRONG FOR THE SHOWDOWN

David Mayhew is heading into this weekend’s Toyota All Star Showdown with momentum, a great attitude, and a great car. He carries into this race the confidence gained with his second place finish in the final points race of the season at Altamont just a few weeks ago. Mayhew has proven that he is a strong competitor and prime contender in the Grand National Series. Having picked up the Golden Gate Racing #21 ride partway through the season the 26 year old from Atascadero, CA has 2 top five finishes in 3 races. “This is a fantastic series, definitely the premier circuit on the West Coast, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to run a few races early in the season. Luckily I caught the eye of a good team and was fortunate enough to finish the final leg of the season as a Golden Gate Racing driver.” Said David. Mayhew intends on continuing to be a force to reckon with at the prestigious Showdown this weekend.

To accompany his confidence, David has a good outlook on the race. Since the points battle is over, the Toyota All Star Showdown is strictly a prestige and money race. Mayhew likes that, “I’m looking forward to a non-points race. And, it would be nice to bring home the big bucks for the team. I’d like to use a top finish here at the final event as a way to thank everyone who has made this season possible; Jim Offenbach and the whole Golden Gate Racing Team as well as our great sponsors; Bay Biodiesel, Golden Gate Petroleum, Corte Madera Tow, Chase Chevrolet, and all the rest.” Said Mayhew.

Mayhew has quite the weekend ahead of him. He is also running the King Taco 150-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race on Friday night at the Irwindale track. This is a big race as well. 40 drivers will compete for $50,000 in posted awards including a $10,000 payout to the winner. Combine that with a winning run in the Showdown which has a stated purse of almost $468,000 and he will be walking away with some serious cash.

Mayhew is also going into the Showdown race with a proven car. Although now sporting the #21 number, it is the ride that Tim McCreadie, another of the Golden Gate Racing Team drivers, ran a top ten finish at the King Taco 200 at Irwindale earlier this season. Not bad for being only the second time the champion dirt late model driver ever ran on pavement.

The car has a long provenance starting with driver Kevin Harvick and the Richard Childress stables. “There is no doubt about it, this is a strong car and I’m looking forward to putting it through its paces at Irwindale.” Said Mayhew in a quick phone interview. “Steve Portenga has been working on the car for some time now and we have made sure that the entire crew is really familiar with the car, and the setup we have for the Irwindale configuration. The team, especially Steve, has a lot of experience at the Southern California track, and I’m certain of a great race and a top finish.0

This event is the culmination of the season for all of the NASCAR Regional Series’. The top drivers from the West Series, the Busch East Series as well as the Canadian and Mexican regionals will all gather for this race.

In the past the race distance for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown has varied. The inaugural event in 2003 was 125 laps. The race distance for events from 2004 to 2006 were 150 laps. This year’s event is slated for 250 laps. The 2007 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, Oct. 19-20, is SPEED TV’s fifth consecutive year of live coverage of the event. The cable network also televised 22 Grand National events this season as part of its Racing Across America series.
