RMR HOSTS CARBONX ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE SERIESROCKY MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE SERIES
Date: 05/01/2008
James Eaton of West Valley, Utah is the all-time RMCS event winner with six career triumphs and four of those coming at RMR. His teammate and fan favorite Zan Sharp of Wellsville has two career victories at the 3/8-mile speedplant along with local star Lynn Hardy who has seen victory lane twice at RMR in RMCS competition. While the local drivers tend to grab a lot of the focus, RMR has been the place where several drivers have earned their first series victory. Craig Bell of Kuna, Idaho, Eddy McKean of Jerome, and Rip Michels out of California have all visited victory lane at RMR. Last season, 2006 RMCS champion Dave Minegar of Boise, Idaho won two of the three series races staged at RMR winning not only the feature event on both occasions but also taking home victories in his heat races and the trophy dash dominating the action. In the other race last season he finished second. “The place (RMR) is just a fun place to race,” Minegar said. “The track really produces good side-by-side racing. Like most races, it always comes down to who has the best car at the end so setup is crucial because if you miss it by just a bit then you miss it by a lot.” Minegar knows a little something about getting around the racetrack as he is the series all-time Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Award winner with 15 career fast times. Local standout Hardy holds the track record set back in May of 2006 with a quick lap of 14.944 seconds/90.334 mph. That record could fall Saturday night with comfortable temperatures and with a good build up of rubber on the track. The RMCS has used the same Hoosier Racing Tire since inception which has proven both durable and very repeatable to race on. Tom Hill of Eagle, Idaho comes into RMR on a hot streak winning the first race of the season two weeks ago at Magic Valley Speedway but it is Minegar who is the point leader by virtue of his total point performance at MVS. Hill is second followed by thane Alderman, Craig Bell, and 2007 champion John Newhouse rounding out the top five. Steve Jones of Boise, Idaho leads a talented group of A-1 Heating & Air Conditioning Rookie-of-the-Year competitors after his third place performance in round one. Other rookie competitors include: Dan Koyle, Shane Thompson, Mitch Dickinson, Travis Monett, David Peterson, Dylan Caldwell, Nathan Olsen, and Eric Rhead. The RMCS utilizes a racing format not found in ANY other regional touring series around the country. The top 20 qualifiers are inverted for every race putting fast time in the 20th starting position. This format ensures race fans see what they paid for and that is passing. Each driver is awarded three points per position gained in the event. Points are also awarded for qualifying and heat race finishes. Through the history of the series, the winning driver has averaged a 15th place starting position. To ensure competition, the RMCS pays it purse based on total point accumulation for the event and provides several special performance awards for the event including: The ESI Hotshoe Award paying $400 to the driver who sets fast time and goes on to win the race (The award is up to $800 this event since it was not paid out at MVS). The CarbonX Lap Leader Bonus paying $5 for every green flag lap led. Sharp Powder Coating pays $100 for fast time. The Thompson Motorsports Halfway Challenge pays $100 to the driver leading at halfway of each event; and the Thompson Motorsports Performance Improvement Award pays the driver $200 who improves the most positions over the previous event.
