SPARKS FLY FRIDAY NIGHT AT MAGIC VALLEY SPEEDWAYTWIN FALLS, Idaho – The Super Modifieds drivers came from as far as northern California for the Fourth of July show at Magic Valley Speedway in an event filled with both triumph and disappointment Friday night.

Jeff Russell of Boise was the main event winner while Bryan Warf had to bear the burden of mechanical problems and view his competitors from the infield.

Early on Jim Birges and Russell were out in front for the 50-lap main event race until lap 30 when the No. 98 car of Troy Reiger entered the picture and took over second position. Four laps later Reiger and Birges tangled in turn three – bringing out the caution with 16 laps remaining in the event. Russell was the recipient of the lead after the encounter and then was able to sprint to the win.

“We just love Twin – we’ve been waiting to come back here for a long time,” Russell said. “We won one at Madera and in another run there we had a power fade which put us in the wall and tore the whole side of the car up. We just got it put back together – so this is great. It’s a lot of work, a lot of fun and a lot of money.”

Warf, who put in a fantastic qualifying time, was running well in the main event until he heard something he knew was definitely not fireworks.

“It went bang,” Warf said. “It sheared the gears. It was pretty disappointing – we almost broke the track record and we started to come through the field – we just can’t seem to catch a break this year.”

Idaho Six Cylinders

Ken Omundson, Sr. had the early lead in a full field for the main event but the race came down to a duel between the cars of Jasen Skyberg and Dean Waltman. Skyberg took over the lead with just five laps remaining in the race but Waltman pursued the bright yellow No. 20 throughout the final laps in an effort to gather the win for himself. However Waltman ran out of laps - and Skyberg was able to collect his first win of the season at MVS.

Kris McKean jumped out to an early lead in the 25-lap main event race and quickly stockpiled the real estate between him and the rest of the field. Points leader Jonathon Gomez struggled to get around the cars ahead of him on the track - finally doing so at near the half-way point of the race. However McKean had the stronger car for the night and was able to cruise across the finish line for his second win of the season in the division.

In the main event race the drivers had only racked up four laps before an incident between turns three and four involving Brent Abbott, Wayne Bosh and Jason Abbott brought out the yellow flag. Another caution for debris later in the race set up a restart with Michael Shoemaker and Raymond Homolka, who were both anticipating their first main even victory of the season. However Josh Pitz, who had obviously recovered from a severely damaged car the previous weekend along with receiving damage to his car in practice this night, was hot on the trail of the leaders. With Shoemaker now battling Pitz, the pair passed under the flag stand neck-and-neck with the white flag signaling one lap to go with Pitz in his favored high groove. As the checkered flag waved the two seemed to cross the finish line virtually simultaneously, but Shoemaker had edged out Pitz to take the win.

Jr. Stingers

Anthony Meyer won an abbreviated main event after a big pile-up early in the race eliminated most of the cars from competition. It was Meyer’s first trip to the winner’s circle this season.
