MONROE, Washington -- Sept. 13 was the Snap On Tools Season Championship at the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA. Spectators gathered to see who would be declared the tracks NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series season champion. Monroes own Tom Moriarity arose triumphant. It was the first time in the tracks 49 year history that a driver has won eight championships. He not only took another season championship but also the evenings feature win, his tenth win of the season and the Super Stock dash. FEAR also had their championships. Shane Sawin of Clearview won the evenings Super F8 feature, John Carlson was the second half champion and the overall 2003 champion.. The Xtreme Contact F8 second half championship was won by Perry Huffman of Everett. Nick Niesen was the evenings Xtreme Contact Figure 8 feature winner.

There was no doubt that the 75 lap Super Stock A Main was the focus of the evening. Defending track champion Tom Moriarity was poised to do what no driver in Evergreen Speedway history had done before: take eight Super Stock championships. The evening started in his favor. Moriarity was on the top of the point standings with a ten point buffer. He was put in a six car invert rather than a full. The driver pushed up from the sixth position into the second position by lap 8, chasing rival John Zaretzke of Maltby. Moriarity took the lead for himself on the first turn of lap 19 and started lapping slower cars by lap 23. He maintained a lead of several car lengths. Zaretzke held second position until a mishap in lap 53 finally allowed Shane Harding to get by. Roger Habich quickly slid into the third position. They did not hold those slots for long. Competition was fierce. Matt Murphy grabbed the second slot in the last part of the race and held on until the checkered flag. Kelly Mann was the unofficial third with Roger Habich and John Zaretzke rounding out the op five..

Nineteen cars started in the 35 lap Super F8 feature. Dale Larson got a good lead but was soon brought up short when a collision in the rear of the field brought out a red flag to clear debris from the track. Rick Shaver got by when the green flag came back out but Chuck Widdis flew up from behind to take the front. Shane Sawin started chasing Widdis and made the pass for the lead at lap 26. The intersection assisted Widdis in regaining the lead for a short while but Sawin prevailed and took the checkered flag. Widdis took second. Pat Clark had third and a hard charger award.

Perry Huffman went into the Xtreme Contact F8 feature with a 41 point lead in the standings. His season win was all but sealed. Jason Holton had a strong start but got tangled up in lap 2 as did Scott Betras who lost a tire, bringing out the red flag and a tow truck. Nick Niesen took the lead and held on to it till the end. He got nearly a full quarter track between himself and Merlin Cook who was chasing. Niesen took the checkered flag and Cook, who followed in second earned a hard charger award.

Dashes for the evening included NASCAR Super Stocks, Super F8s and Xtreme Contact F8s. The checkered flag for the Super Stocks dash went to Tom Moriarity at the line. Doug Davidson had been the leader throughout the dash until the last few car lengths. The Super F8 dash was won by John Cowboy Carlson. After an amazing start and the lead all the way, the Xtreme Contact F8 dash was won by Merlin Cook.

Although the season championships are over, the Saturday evening fun continues at the Evergreen Speedway. Next weekend, Sept. 20 and 21, is the Challenge Cup. See Late Models, Bombers and Sprint Cars battle it out both Saturday and Sunday. Our season finale is Sept. 27. The Speedway welcomes back Boat Races, Hornets, Bump to Pass, Demo Derby, School Bus F8, Roll Over, 3 Car Trains, fireworks and more.
